Back pain can suddenly occur when your work entails heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling, and even more so if you’re active in sports or an athlete. Instead of hunching over in pain, you just want to get back to your life—free from any type of discomfort. Here are six tips to help you deal with a back problem.
Avoid Repetition
Standing or sitting for long periods of time, as well as repetitive movements will only aggravate a back injury. Modify tasks and avoid any sort of repetitive movement.
Couch Potato
Avoid sitting on a soft bed or couch or any other flimsy surface. A soft surface can create instability in your back and could potentially result in further injury.
Exercise
Swimming or gently walking in the pool puts the least amount of stress on your body while keeping it fit and conditioned.
Posture
Practice good posture when standing, sitting, and walking. Poor posture can cause an imbalance that could lead to more back pain.
Cold
Apply a cold pack for 15 minutes, 3-4 times a day, to reduce both pain and swelling. After 48-72 hours, alternate with heat.
Consult a Professional
If pain persists for an extended period of time, or if there is weakness or pain running down one leg, consulting a physician or sports medicine practitioner is the most important step to take. A physician or a sports medicine doctor can determine the most effective treatment plan to ease your discomfort and return you back to your normal life.
