Prevent Sports Injuries This Winter with These Tips

Each year, approximately 440,000 people receive treatment for winter sports-related injuries. These injuries include strains, sprains, dislocations and fractures. Winter sports can be a great way to stay active during the cold months. Stay safe and prevent an injury by using these safety tips.

Always Warm Up Before Playing or Participating in a Sport

Warming up by doing some light cardiovascular exercises, such as jogging in place, and lightly stretching the muscles can help to prevent strains and sprains from occurring. Cold muscles, ligaments and tendons are more susceptible to injury, so ensure that you are adequately warmed up before playing.

Wear Proper Clothing and Footwear

Wearing several layers of light clothing that are loose and wind-resistant will help you to stay warm and dry while playing. Layers that can be easily removed can help accommodate changes in body temperature and prevent hypothermia or overheating. Proper footwear that fits and is put on correctly will give support to the ankles and can help to prevent ankle and foot injuries.

Never Participate Alone

It may be tempting to head out for a day of skiing or skating alone, but it is always best to bring someone with you. Should an emergency occur, a friend will be able to help you and get additional assistance if necessary.

Get Proper Lessons

Always take lessons from a qualified instructor and make sure you know the sport well before trying it on your own. Skiing and snowboarding instructors can teach you how to properly fall and other steps to take to prevent injuries from occurring.
